When I woke up the next day it was to find Janice seated at the foot of my bed flipping through a book. I supposed that answered that, getting a familiar was definitely allowing more power to flow into my legacy mark.
"Morning," I said.
"It is. We need to talk. Getting a familiar makes it possible, but it also opened you up to some risks. I'm the strongest voice in here for you so I'm serving as our spokesperson," Janice said.
Right to the point. I wasn't ready for a serious talk, not at six in the morning.
"The new power obviously gave you a voice. What about access to your memories?" I asked.
"Some. That isn't really a good thing at this stage of your development. Some of us are team players, some aren't. You risk getting drowned out if one of us shouts loud enough," Janice said.
I'd thought that was probably a risk. It was one that I'd grow into; I was strong-willed, and I knew it. Some people questioned how far they could push themselves. It wasn't something I had to question.
"Do you think it was a good idea?" I asked. Janice was the voice of intellect in my mind, which meant she must be the brightest of the past holders of my mark.
"I'd have been more cautious and found a way to speak with us before doing so. Even then, I might not have gotten a familiar quite so strong. You've opened yourself up to a tug of war both internally and externally that you hardly understand. You've also given yourself some big obligations," Janice said, sighing and setting aside the book.
"Is she really that strong?" I asked.
"Nowadays people think of nymphs as giggly flighty things but in the old world they worshiped them and they were wise to do so for a furious nymph could take their sons and daughters, sink their ships, drown their cities. You are now a worshiper yourself, your contract says worship for a reason however pleasurable the nature of it. You've bound yourself to a minor goddess. One with access to a major source of power. The Headmistress plays a more dangerous game than you know if she would bind you to such a power," Janice said with a tiny frown.
"Do you think she is on my side?" I asked.
"Not exactly, but I think you've positioned yourself to be on hers. You're a piece on her chessboard and you're wearing the right color. My memories are still not complete but from what I do remember mages are a scheming bunch. There are always plots within plots and schemes within schemes and someone trying to take the power base of another. I think she is trying to make you useful, even at a perilous risk to yourself," Janice said.
It all made sense enough, and the more I thought in it the more I thought I agreed with her. While that didn't necessarily speak well of Circe, there was one way to make this pay off for both me and her.
